For decades, neighbours and friends, foodies and yogis, young and old, have come to this historic site in La Jolla to share a cup of coffee and a conversation: our team included. Our dream is to continue the legacy of this sacred space that has become such an important part of the fabric of La Jolla.
Il giardino di Lilli is a concept that was first conceived by love. Affection, care, passion and self-expression is what brought Giuseppe Scognamiglio and Stefania Sciomachen to grow a dream together. The dream of bringing these feelings into a space, as a breeze that meets peoples’ paths. Stefania is an interior designer from Bologna. She named the cafe after her grandma, Liliana, who meant more than she can put to words. Camelie, magnolie, gelsomini..and some authentic Italian antiques that evoke Lilli’s home. At Il giardino di Lilli you will meet Giuseppe, a young man from Napoli that will genuinely make you smile.
From their first meeting, the couple shared a dream of opening a cafe that pays homage to the traditional italian way: an appreciation for quality ingredients, attention to detail, and a warm and relaxed atmosphere.
When Stefania’s grandmother, Lilliana, passed away in 2022, they decided to name the cafe “Il Giardino di Lilli” meaning “Lilli’s Garden”, home to Stefania’s fondest memories growing up in Italy.
Many of our pastries are inspired by Lilliana’s recipes, and our garden is filled with all of her favorite flowers.
